Mission Honduras
St. Christophers Mission Outreach outside the United States is working
with the Diocese of Honduras. For several years, the parishioners of St. Christophers
have traveled to Honduras to do construction work, begin new churches and assist
in social programs.
It is a long-term program
and if you have an interest or question, please call the church office and a
member of the outreach team will be in touch with you.
Mission outreach: beyond the borders not only of our parish, community,
city and state but even our country. St. Christophers outreach mission
has found a need and a welcoming presence in Honduras whose strong encouragement,
interest and blessing we enjoy. We are entering our fifth year of involvement
there, and what a blessing this experience has been not only to those of us
who have traveled there to work among the churched and unchurched, but also
for those on the home front whose prayers and pocketbooks support our ongoing
work. We have seen great glorious progress and found that indeed the harvest
is plenty and the workers are few. Despite some initial misgiving and skepticism,
the faithful of St. Christophers and indeed our community have rallied
around and made possible our long-term commitment to addressing the multiplicity
of needs of the Honduran people.
From the outset weve been accomplishing wonderful things benefiting whole
communities and many, many families. Among the many blessings of working among
the people of Honduras is the surprise element of each trip. We trundle down
with our plans all made, and God inevitably surprises us with His Plan! From
social projects such as building a chicken coop...a gentle nudge into free enterprise,
to various construction projects such as repairing existing church facilities,
the adoption of a village and our commitment to assist them in spiritual growth
and eventually constructing a church, to womens workshops and basic health
classes through which we provide soap, shampoo, eye glasses, toothpaste and
brushes. Weve visited schools and seen first hand the great need we can
fill as a parish by providing basic supplies, pencils, tablets, crayons, scissors,
and books! The joy on the faces of village women when they saw our supply of
scissors for the crafts projects spurred us on to hold a scissors collection
which provided each home in Las Crucitas a pair of scissors a luxury item in
this impoverished country.
Along with many other Episcopal congregations weve expanded our ministry to include shipping large containers of used items to
Honduras. This is a multi-pronged endeavor in that jobs are provided and skills taught as the items are repaired and resold. The resulting
revenue generated spills over into all areas of the ongoing ministry. We are especially committed to providing not only financial support but
spiritual and emotional support to the ever growing team of lay pastors, now some twenty in number, who bear the responsibility of taking the
Good News into the rural villages where clergy and the mission of the church is seldom present. For those who have heeded the call to serve
God and His church it is an arduous task filled not only with the responsibility of their flocks, but with their own ongoing educational studies under
the tutelage of a priest. Meeting these commitments often involves long bus rides, longer walks, separations from family and personal economic
hardship, all the while trying to keep body and soul together on a small stipend.
The adventure continues. Our team has grown to include representatives from
several faiths who share with us a desire to be a part of mission work. We learned
much about ourselves, our endurance, our hidden talents and our capacity for
loving and giving from the depths of our spirits! We have sung, prayed, worshiped
and rejoiced with our Honduran friends and we have found it to be an enriching
life altering experience. We would like to invite you to be a part of this growing
ministry. If you have an interest or would like to know more about this exciting
spirit-filled program, please call the church office and a member of the outreach
team will be in touch with you.
